W. Thomas Chalmers of Meadville, Pa. — beloved family man and steadfast volunteer for many community organizations — passed away peacefully on September 18, 2022. He was 80.
Born June 10, 1942, in Beaver, Pa., Tom moved to Meadville after earning a bachelor’s degree in biology from Geneva College in Beaver. Working at the state health department, Tom met and soon married Georgia (Smith); they recently celebrated 55 years of joyful marriage.
Tom worked as a computer and business manager for Talon Zipper, Rusco Windows, Dad’s Dog Food and Ernst Seed before retiring. He was a passionate and dedicated volunteer with the West Mead #2 Fire Department (as a first responder and fire police), the American Red Cross (working blood drives and on the Disaster Response Team), the United Way (building countless wheelchair ramps in the community) and the Epiphany of the Lord Parish (wherever and whenever he was needed). In 2019, he was recognized as a “Hometown Hero” by The Meadville Tribune.
Tom loved the outdoors and spent many of his happiest moments hiking, backpacking, camping and canoeing, especially as a member of Boy Scout Troop 495 in Beaver and as a leader with Boy Scout Troop 209 in Meadville.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, David and Myra Chalmers, and his brother James Chalmers.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia; his son Michael Chalmers, his wife Dawn and their son Luke, of New London, Pa.; his son W. Richard Chalmers, his wife Bridget, and their adult children, Kevin and Julia, of Pittsburgh; his brothers David Chalmers of Pittsburgh, Robert Chalmers of Pittsburgh, and Quinn Chalmers of Saginaw, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West Mead #2 Vol. Fire Dept., 20607 Ryan Road, Meadville, PA 16335, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or a no-kill animal shelter. Also, please consider donating blood in Tom’s honor.
Family and friends are invited to call from 12-2 PM on Friday, September 23, 2022, at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE.
A Mass of Resurrection will follow at 2:30 PM on Friday, at The Epiphany of the Lord Parish, St. Agatha Church, 353 Pine St., Meadville, with Fr. Jeff Lucas, Pastor, officiating.
