Dr. Victor John Pilewski (VJ), a devoted physician and cherished family man, passed away suddenly at his home on May 1, 2025, at the age of 42. Born on January 25, 1983, in Oil City. He was the son of Victor James and Mary Margaret (Kleck) Pilewski, who predeceased him.
Dr. Pilewski graduated from Oil City High School, where he was not only member of, but also the Co-Captain of, the Football Team. He furthered his education at Allegheny College, earning a degree in Chemistry, before transforming his aspirations into reality at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, where he was Chief Resident during 2013-2014. There he was also honored with the General Surgery Resident Teaching Award, reflecting his dedication to both learning and teaching within the medical community. He later achieved certification from the American Board of Surgery, solidifying his expertise in the field.
From 2014 to 2017, Dr. Pilewski practiced at St. Claire Hospital in Morehead, Kentucky, before continuing his career at Meadville Medical Center. His colleagues and patients alike recognized him for his genuine care and compassion, qualities that shaped his reputation as a physician who went above and beyond. One example of his compassion towards his patients was last Christmas Eve when he had four patients that would not be home for Christmas, he took it upon himself to cook each one of them a steak dinner and, along with his young son, delivered it, and visited with each one while they enjoyed their steak. It was very important to him that each one of them had a special Christmas dinner, so he made it happen. In 2021, he was named Doctor of the Year at Meadville Medical Center, and in 2023 he was honored by the Pennsylvania Medical Society on Doctor's Day, a testament to his commitment and contributions to the health and well-being of his community. Additionally, he served as Meadville Medical Center's Medical Staff President from 2022-2024, and was currently serving as Chairman of Credentials.
Victor had a profound love for the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing down the Allegheny River, and walks in the woods. He cherished the time spent with his family, friends, and his beloved dogs at their camp. Additionally, he had a penchant for motorcycling and four-wheeling, which provided him with joy and adventure. He had a fondness for all animals, especially dogs. He loved to cook for others and possessed a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor that will be missed by so many. A member of The Epiphany of the Lord Parish, his faith was an integral part of his life, offering strength and comfort during both the challenges and triumphs he faced.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lainey (Mattox) Pilewski, and their three children: Lennox, Hayden, and Lyla Pilewski. He is also survived by his siblings: Joseph Schwab (Linda) of Oil City and their children Emily, Taylor, and Hillary; Rachael Myers (Joseph) of Granger, IL, and their children Erin, Sean, Sarah, and Kathryn; Liz Brewer (Dan) of Erie and their children Danielle, Ashley, Meagan, John, Robynn, and Ethan; Marj Kalamajka (Jerry) of Oil City and their children Ryan and Sadie; Doug Schwab (Cindy) of Gibsonia and their children Katrina and Lauren; his parents-in-law, Mike and Liz Mattox, and brother in law Ben Mattox, all from Carlisle, KY.
