Richard Lee Smith, 88, of Meadville, PA, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025.
Born in Meadville, PA, Richard lived a full and meaningful life rooted in hard work, family, and a deep love of the outdoors.
Throughout his career, Richard served as a maintenance man for the Conneaut School District, Saegertown Manufacturing Company, and Bethesda Children’s Home. He was a steady and dependable presence in the workplace, remembered by many for his work ethic and dedication.
Well-known in the hunting and fishing community, Richard turned a lifelong passion into a small business, founding Sam’s Flys, where he handcrafted fishing lures that were sold year-round in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York. He took great pride in the craft and the connections it brought him with fellow outdoor enthusiasts.
Richard was a salt-of-the-earth man who believed in putting family first. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Mary Ann Smith, with whom he shared 41 years of marriage before her passing on April 10, 2013—nearly twelve years to the day before his own. He was a loving father to his son Carl Smith, 51, of San Diego, CA, and a proud grandfather to Carl’s son, Ezekiel Smith, age 8.
He cherished every moment spent with his family, especially teaching his son countless practical life lessons that will live on for generations. His wisdom, strength, and quiet generosity left a lasting imprint on those around him.
Richard was the son of Karl and Adelaide Smith, who instilled in him the values of integrity, resilience, and humility—traits he carried with him every day of his life.
An informal celebration of life will be held at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE, on Sunday, May 25, 2025, from 3-5 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Richard’s name to a youth outdoor education program of your choice.
