Jerry Darwin Swavey, 73, of 16683 S. Mead Rd., Saegertown, passed away Thursday, February 13th, 2014 at home.

Jerry was born in Meadville, on September 29, 1940, a son of the late Robert Lynn and Dorothy (Scheckler) Swavey.

On December 4, 1958 Jerry married his childhood sweetheart, Barbara Jean Nageotte; she survives. She was the love of his life for 55 years.

At the young age of 13 Jerry started his building career where he helped to construct and remodel homes. Following his 1958 graduation from Saegertown High School, he began working full time building furniture for Frontier Homes. Jerry entered the Army National Guard in 1958 and later the US Army here attained the rank of Sergeant. In 1962 he became employed by Huson Chemicals of Saegertown where he worked for 28 years. During the same year he established Jerrys Upholstery & Furnishings which he operated for many years. Additionally in the early 1980s he opened and operated Hayfield Furniture for a period of 13 years. Jerry never tired of doing carpentry work as woodworking and cabinet making were his hobbies. He would often buy older homes, remodel and sell them. He also owned several rental properties in the Saegertown area. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #408. Jerry held a special place in his heart for animals. He owned and cared for three dogs and three cats at the of his death. An avid outdoors man, Jerry loved being out in the woods and was a great hunter and fisherman.

In addition to his wife Barbara, Jerry is survived by two sons Dr. Michael Allen Swavey, Mark Samuel Swavey and his wife Jiluo, both of Saegertown, two sisters Roberta Jean Smith and her husband Walter of Suwanee, GA, Sandra K. Thomas of Fayetteville, NC, six nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 330 Broad St., Saegertown.
