Jane C. Nickerson, 89, of Meadville, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2024, at Wesbury United Methodist Community.
Jane was born on July 28, 1935, a daughter of the late Robert and Ruth (Mignery) Cushman.
On June 16, 1956 Jane married Thomas D. Nickerson, Sr.; and they shared a wonderful life together until he preceded her in death on June 29, 2018.
For many years Jane served as Executive Director of the former YWCA of Meadville where she had a strong interest in the community, first aid and in water safety. She had a lifelong passion for the American Red Cross, serving as a volunteer for many years. Jane spent many years training life guards and served as a liaison for many natural disasters throughout the United States. She would travel to many sites throughout our country, staying for two to three months at a time helping those that had been displaced because of tornados, floods, fires or storms. Jane was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Meadville. Her hobbies included knitting and crocheting. She cherished following all of the many sporting events and accomplishments of her grandsons. Jane will be remembered for her kind and caring ways as a loving and devoted wife and mother; and, for her service to others in the community.
Jane is survived by her son Douglas Nickerson (Robin) of Meadville; four grandchildren Christian Nickerson, Esquire (Jessica) of Los Angeles, CA, Dr. Morgan Nickerson (Ashley) of State College, PA, Taylor Nickerson (Madeline) of Marina del Rey, CA, Cade Nickerson, C.P.A., of Sarasota, FL; a brother Bob Cushman (Martha) of Charlotte, NC; a brother-in-law George Mahofski of Sarasota FL; a daughter in law Susan Nickerson of Rhinebeck, NY, nieces and nephews. She was especially delighted to be a great grandmother to Blake, Ryder, Scarlett, Sophia and Preston. She honored them and their births with a special engraved sterling cup commemorating each of their births.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Thomas of 62 years, Jane was preceded in death by a son Thomas D. Nickerson, Jr.; a brother Everett Cushman; and a sister Sally Mahofski.
The family wishes to acknowledge the special bond that Jane developed with her brother-in-law, George Mahofski, following her sister Sallys death. George was a constant source of inspiration and comfort to Jane as they had the opportunity to chat daily and continue to develop their relationship while recalling many special family memories shared together.
Another ray of light in Janes later years was her dear friend Jill who she developed a genuine friendship and caring bond. Jill supported Jane in so many ways and was such a loyal and devoted friend for over 5 years. She was instrumental in allowing Jane to live out a dignified and happy life. It was an honor seeing the two of them together and a special tribute to Jills compassion and caring qualities and her unwavering support in Janes final years.
Private services will be held.
