James R. Smith, 89, of Saegertown, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Wesbury United Methodist Community, Meadville.

James was born in Meadville, on June 6, 1936, a son of the late Earl and Mary (Echnoz) Smith.

On June 29, 1957, James married Marie Ellen Welch; she preceded him in death on July 17, 2020.

He attended New Beginnings Church of God with his wife.

James retired from Ideal Tool with over 50 years of service as a Journeyman tool and die maker. He previously had worked for DIC Tool and C&J Industries. In his younger years, he was a member of Saegertown Volunteer Fire Department. James was a 1956 graduate of Saegertown High School. He was an avid roller skater who skated and competed in many competitions with his wife Marie. His life long love of skating dates back to his early 20's when he met his wife in Butler while roller skating. Together they traveled and competed for several years while skating weekly, traveling to Erie well into there 70's. James was a PIAA umpire for high school baseball, softball and he refereed basketball games. He was a dedicated NASCAR enthusiast and a fan of David Allison. He attended over 30 races, many with his sons. James was a Jack of all trades. He was a skilled builder, building homes in Hailwood Heights. He enjoyed working on his antique car and traveling to many weekend car shows. Family and holiday gatherings, on both sides of the family, were very special to him. James loved hunting with with John and Robert as well as golfing; he never remained idle and was always on the go.

James is survived by two sons John R. Smith (Julie), Robert J. Smith both of Saegertown; a step grandson Carson; a sister Carol Niebauer of Saegertown; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Neil, Larry and Jerry Smith.

Family and friends are invited to call from 10 AM-1 PM on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at New Beginnings Church of God, 13226 Leslie Road, Meadville, where funeral services will follow at 1 PM with Walter Clark officiating.

James will be laid to rest in Venango Cemetery.
