J. Terry Hanes, 79, of Meadville, passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2020, at Crawford County Care Center.
Mr. Hanes was born in Meadville, on December 24, 1940, a son of the late Joseph and Edna (Wilson) Hanes.
On September 21, 1958 Terry married Deloris "Jeanne" Thompson; she survives.
Mr. Hanes was a 1958 graduate of Meadville High School, attended Grove City College and completed a four year construction apprenticeship with I.B.E.W. in 1964. He retired in 2004 as President/Business Manager of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #385, located in Pittsburgh. During his 43 years of service he served as Recording Secretary and President of I.B.E.W. Local #504 located in Meadville. In addition, he was also employed as a field representative for I.B.E.W. Local #712 located in Beaver.
Hanes served as campaign chairman for the 1987-88 Western Crawford County United Way Campaign and following the campaign, he served as president for two years. In addition, he was involved in numerous community organizations and activities including Meadville Kiwanis, as member and Trustee of Meadville Elks #219, Saegertown United Methodist Church, Meadville Sewer Authority, Crawford Lodge #234, F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of New Castle, Kismet Grotto where he served as past monarch, Northwest PA Training Partnership Consortium, Inc. where he served on the Advisory Board, Meadville Planning & Zoning Commission, Secretary/Treasurer of Meadville Labor Temple Building Association, treasurer of Crawford County Democratic Committee, board member of Meadville Area Industrial Commission, Secretary of Great Lakes Building and Construction Trade Council, co-chairman of Crawford County Labor-Management Council, Crawford County Labor Union Council where he served as past president, and president of Crawford County READ Program. He loved playing golf with his special friend Larry and was an avid tennis player in his younger days. He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins and traveling with his friends. He was a devoted husband, father, and Poppy always supporting his kids at their many sporting events. He was their biggest cheerleader! He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
In addition to his wife Jeannie, Terry is survived by two children Debra L. Grahm (Roger) of Chillicothe, OH, Michael Hanes (Joan) of Edmond, OK; sister Linda Jackson (Dennis) of Meadville; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Terry was preceded in death by a son C. Tracy Hanes.
