Helen A. Fischer

Helen A. Fischer, 96, of Meadville, passed away Monday, December 14, 2020, at Wesbury, where she had been a resident.

Helen was born in Oil City, on September 18, 1924, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Pachlita) Filipowski.

On October 23, 1948 Helen married Robert "Bob" A. Fischer; he preceded her in death on June 2, 2009.

She was a member of St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary Society, where she enjoyed singing in the choir.

A graduate of Oil City High School, Helen took a year off during her high school years so she could work and earn money to buy herself a winter coat. She not only went back and graduated high school, but also graduated from West Penn Nursing School as a registered nurse. She became employed by the former Meadville City Hospital in the Maternity Ward before working as an RN at the Crawford County Home. Her nursing career turned to private practice as an RN for the late Dr. DeKreiff. She enjoyed her career and caring for others. Following her retirement she continued to work part time at the former Hillside Home. Helen had been a member of the Sweet Adelines. In her down time, she enjoyed listening to opera music, reading murder mysteries, watching detective stories, playing cards and traveling. For many years she and her husband spent the winter months in Florida. Helen also enjoyed collecting figurines relating to nursing as well as tea pots and she rarely missed her daily outings at McDonalds with her dear friends.

Helen is survived by a son Robert L. Fischer (Vickie), a daughter Renie Fischer both of Meadville; three grandchildren Samuel Fischer (Kendra), Erik Deschamps, Daniel Fischer; two great grandchildren Henry and Evee; a brother Edward Filipowski (Lois) of Dempseytown; nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Bob, of 60 years, Helen was preceded in death by three sisters Kathryn Say, Anna Jane Wermlinger, Adeline Sullenger; and a brother Frank Filipowski.

Due to Covid, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Jeffrey Lucas, Pastor, officiating. For anyone who would like to attend virtually, the Mass will be live streamed via facebook (Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc.)

Helen will be laid to rest next to her husband, Bob, in St. Brigid Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Brigid Church, 383 Arch St. or Wesbury Foundation, 31 N. Park Ave., both in Meadville, PA 16335, or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE.
