Gary Stephen Knott

Gary Stephen Knott, 52, passed away August 24, 2026. Born November 29, 1973, Gary was raised in Conneaut Lake, where his story began and, after a life defined by service, faith, and devotion to family, came full circle.

Gary met the love of his life, Carrie, at Fireman’s Beach in Conneaut Lake. They married in 1994 and built a life centered on faith, family, and an extraordinary love for one another. Gary was a devoted husband and the ultimate girl dad to his daughters, Mariah and Kalli. Although he accomplished many remarkable things during his life, nothing mattered more to him than his family. They were the center of everything he did.

Gary dedicated 29 years to law enforcement, including 25 years of active service with the Pennsylvania State Police. He achieved the rank of Master Trooper and spent 13 years with the Safe Highways Initiative through Effective Law Enforcement and Detection, known as the SHIELD unit. He also served as a Task Force Officer with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Gary was involved in high profile drug interdiction, human trafficking, and criminal investigations. His expertise was respected across the country, and he instructed law enforcement professionals at the local, state, and federal levels. Colleagues affectionately called him “The General,” reflecting his leadership and the tremendous respect he earned.

His many honors included Troop and Bureau Letters of Commendation, a Commissioner’s Letter of Commendation in 2023, and being named Trooper of the Year multiple times. Yet he never measured his life by titles, awards, or professional accomplishments.

Gary believed people should not become so consumed by the eight hours spent at work that they neglected the sixteen hours outside of it. He encouraged others to protect their faith, family, health, and relationships before allowing a career to become their identity. He lived that message by putting God and family first.

For more than 20 years, Gary poured his heart into PSP Troop E Camp Cadet. He helped young people develop confidence, leadership, discipline, teamwork, and respect. He did more than teach cadets. He challenged them to recognize their own potential and believe in what they were capable of.

That was one of Gary’s greatest gifts. He had a rare ability to make everyone he encountered feel important, valued, and respected. Unafraid to express emotion or show love, he wrote heartfelt letters and famously long Facebook posts that overflowed with love for his family. His priorities were unmistakable because he spoke about them openly and lived them consistently.

Gary was passionate about health and wellness. He loved running, biking, lifting weights, using his sauna and cold plunge, and learning about nutrition. His family and friends will always remember his homemade spice blends, “green paste,” elaborate chopped salads, and the giant cooler his team personalized just for him.

Above everything, Gary was a man of Christian faith. His life demonstrated that strength and tenderness could exist together, that leadership did not require sacrificing compassion, and that love should be spoken, written, and shown without hesitation.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of nearly 32 years, Carrie; his daughters, Mariah (Nathan) Mayes and Kalli; his mother in law, Nancy Schutz; his sister, Jeanni Segura, and her sons, Noah and Jaime; and his uncle, Matt Coy, who grew up alongside him like a brother.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gary C. Knott and Barbara A. Coy, and his infant brother, Stephen Knott.

A police memorial service honoring Gary’s life and service will be open to the public Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at New Beginnings Church of God, 13226 Leslie Road, Meadville, Pennsylvania 16335.

Gary’s greatest legacy is found in the people he loved, the lives he influenced, the faith he lived, and the countless people he made feel they mattered. He will always be remembered as a devoted husband, a father whose daughters never doubted how deeply they were loved, and a man who loved his family openly and without reservation.
