Frank N. Costa, 98, of 537 Beers Ave., Meadville, passed away Friday, February 25, 2011, at home, in the arms of his son.
Frank was born in Brachton, on November 27, 1912, a son of the late Gateno 'Guy' and Roseana (Negri) Costa.
On February 14, 1939, Frank married Jennie Amato; she survives.
He was an active member St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, Meadville, where he served as President of the Holy Name Society for eight years.
After more than 40 years of service, Frank retired as a Flying Squadron Inspector from the former Talon, Inc. of Meadville. During that time he also worked for the Rober Tailor Company, a mens custom tailor company, where he was involved with selling suits door-to-door and making house calls for custom suit fittings. In his earlier years he had been employed by the Erie Railroad. A strong supporter of the community, Frank held several civic positions and earned many awards. For many years Frank was a member of the Crawford County Republican Party Executive Board. He was named Republican Man of the year in 1989, Republican Committee Man for the 4th Ward and was the recipient of the Pennsylvania Voters Hall of Fame Award in recognition of 50 years of consecutive voting in the general election. A longtime member of the Italian Civic Club, Frank served for over 40 years as an officer, including 12 years as club president. Frank was a very skilled and avid golfer as well as golf instructor. He was instrumental in the Junior Golf Program. His years of golf acquired him the name of 'The Wizard'. Frank will be remembered for loving life to the fullest. In his words, his first love was his wife, Jennie, second love was his family, third and forth were faith and country.
In addition to his wife Jennie of 72 years, Frank is survived by three children Guy Costa and his wife Mary Ann, Betty Longo, Shirley Callan and her husband Bryan, seven grandchildren Guy Costa, Jr. and his wife Dawn, Bryan Costa and his wife Brenda, Chuck Longo and his wife Tabatha, Lenee Dickson and her husband Jack, Jason Longo and his wife Jammie, Kristina Callan, Bradley Callan, ten great grandchildren Michael and Matt Costa, Joseph and Christopher Costa, Jordanna and Dominick Longo, Shea and Talia Dickson, Cambrie and Carlie Longo, two sisters Rose Page, Jenny Costa, a brother Tom Costa and his wife Kathy of Lebanon, OH, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews.
In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his step-mother Elizbeth, two sisters Mary Ann 'Annie' Marendo, Josephine Costa, two brothers Andrew 'Andy' Costa, Ralph F. Costa and a son-in-law Charles 'Chuck' Longo.
Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 3-8 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a scripture service will be conducted at 5:30 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville, at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 28th, with Fr. Marc Solomon, Pastor, officiating.
Entombment will take place in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
