Emma Mae Powell, 89, of Meadville, passed away Thursday, July 17 2025, at Embassy of Park Ave.
Emma was born in Rimersburg, on January 13, 1936, a daughter of the late Vernard and Jessie (Switzer) Shumaker. Her mom passed away when she was only two years old so she left Rimersburg and was lovingly raised in Meadville by her paternal grandparents George and Emma Dewey.
On August 27, 1955 Emma married Edward D. Powell; he preceded her in death on September 14, 2007.
A 1954 graduate of Meadville High School, Emma began her working carrier in the Circulation Department of the Meadville Tribune. She later became employed by Greenleaf Corporation and Saegertown Carbide where she was a machine operator and eventually became an office secretary. One not to remain idle, she returned to the Circulation Department of the Meadville Tribune until retirement. Emma loved staying active and being outdoors especially working in her vegetable garden. She equally loved canning her harvest which was enjoyed by her family in the winter months. Swimming kept Emma in shape and she did so well into her 80's. Emma was a huge fan of John Wayne. She could likely recite any line of any of his movies and a picture or poster of him was always in sight. Emma loved her family deeply and was in turn loved deeply. She will be missed.
Emma is survived by two children Brenda Raney (Jeffrey) of Adamsville, Steven Powell (Jody) of Union City; four grandchildren Adam Raney (Michele), Erin Uber (Thomas), Alyssa Fox (Kurtis), Jarett Powell (Sarah); and she was loved by nine great grandchildren as well.
She was the last survivor of her siblings being preceded in death by brother Earl Shumaker and sister Lois Passauer.
Visitation is from 11 AM-1 PM on Monday, July 21, 2025, at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE, where Funeral Services will follow at 1 PM, with Loren Little, Chaplain of Hospice of Crawford County, officiating.
Emma will be laid to rest with her husband, Edward, in Blooming Valley Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Emma's memory to Hospice of Crawford County, 766 Liberty St., Meadville, PA 16335.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Embassy for the wonderful care they provided.
