Dennis Eugene McCartney, 71, of Saegertown, passed away suddenly, Friday, January 29, 2021, at home.
Dennis was born in Meadville, on February 27, 1949, a son of the late Donald and Cecelia (Stadler) McCartney.
On December 22.1969, Dennis married Judith "Judy" Haemer; she survives.
A 1967 graduate of Saegertown High School, Dennis enlisted in the US Marine Corps on February 12, 1969 and served in country honorably during the Vietnam War until his discharge on February 11, 1971. He attained the rank of Corporal and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Following his military discharge, Dennis enrolled in Edinboro College and graduated in 1975 with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. His teaching career spanned over 31 years with Penncrest School District and included teaching at Saegertown Elementary, Saegertown Middle School and Cussewago Elementary, from where he retired in 2005. Dennis loved teaching in the same community where he and his children grew up. Not one to remain idle, after retirement, Dennis drove for Wycoff, transporting special needs students and also worked part time at Peterson's Auto Supply. His decision to finally fully retire allowed Dennis and Judy to travel to Alaska, the New England states and to spend more time boating at Pymatuning and to take camping trips. The yearly family vacations to Chincoteague Island brought Dennis and his family much joy.
Dennis was a member of Saegertown United Methodist Church and of Saegertown American Legion. His hobbies included collecting coins and wildlife patches for his grandchildren, hunting, fishing, bowling at the Eagles, and wine making with friends. He had a great sense of humor and was rumored to have a lifetime membership at C & R Video. For many years Dennis taught hunter safety classes and spent countless hours as a time keeper for Saegertown school sports and as a coach for girls basketball. Regardless of how much or where he worked and volunteered, Dennis always made time for his family and was so proud of each one of them. His life centered around his wife, children and grandchildren. He was very involved in their lives and was always willing to help them in any way he could, always doing so with a humble attitude and loving spirit. Dennis will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father and PaPa and will be forever missed.
In addition to his wife, Judy, of 51 years, Dennis is survived by three daughters Melissa M. Williams (fiance Justin Walker), Betsy C. Tautin (Michael), Joyce M. Dillaman (Jon) all of Saegertown; seven grandchildren Travis and Conrad Williams, Ella and Addison Tautin, Helena, Claire and Meradith Dillaman.
In addition to his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by three brothers Ronald McCartney, Carl McCartney and infant Donald McCartney.
Private services will be held with Pastor Jeffrey Little of Saegertown United Methodist Church officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dennis' memory to Saegertown Volunteer Fire Dept. PO Box 164, or Saegertown United Methodist Church, PO Box 689, both in Saegertown, PA 16433.
