Violet Cole, 99, of 2720 Charles Town Rd., Martinsburg, WV, passed away Monday, July 4th, 2011, at Care Haven Center, Martinsburg, WV.
Violet was born in Erie on December 24, 1911, a daughter of the late James and Norma (Totman) Gillespie.
On May 24, 1934 Violet married C. Gordon Cole; he preceded her in death in 1976.
She was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church, Easton, MD .
For 34 years, Violet was employed as a first grade teacher. For many years she and her husband, Gordon, had owned Coles Restaurant in Saegertown. A graduate of Erie Central High School, Violet furthered her education by graduating from Edinboro College with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. A former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Violet had served as Worthy Matron. She had also served as President of the Saegertown Firemans Auxiliary, President of Saegertown PSEA, President of the Womens Club, Secretary to the Rebekahs, Master and Pianist for the French Creek Valley Grange, and she was an honorary member of Saegertown Fire Dept. In 1976, at the young age of 65, Violet learned how to drive and in 1979 she moved to Easton, MD where she became involved in the community and volunteered at St. Marks Thrift Shop for 12 years as well as Easton Memorial Hospital for the same amount of time. Violet loved to play the piano and was very involved in anything church or music related. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Violet is survived by ten grandchildren Colleen Siems, Donald DeLong, Julie Sloat, Steven DeLong, Wendy Towers, Mark Edsall, Greg Edsall, Scott Davis, Pollyanna Nelson, Michelle Sanders, 22 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, a daughter-in-law Vora Cole of Saegertown and a son-in-law Klaus Lohner of IL.
In addition to her parents and husband, Gordon of 42 years, Violet was preceded in death by three children Richard Cole, Marty Lou Lohner, Mary Alice Edsall, six brothers and sisters James, Wynne, Thomas, John, Nevin and Isabel.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held during Memorial Day Weekend, 2012, with an exact date and time to be announced mid May.
Interment will take place in Saegertown Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions for a scholarship fund established in Violets memory may be made to Violet G. Cole Memorial Scholarship Fund, C/O PNC Bank, PO Box 658, Saegertown, PA 16433.
