Straw Douglas Ray

Douglas Ray Straw, 65, of 136 Plum St., Greenville, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2015 at home surrounded by his family.

Douglas was born in Meadville, on November 1, 1950, a son of the late Robert E. and Mary Jayne (Grounds) Straw.

On August 4, 1978 Douglas married Darlene Marie Heisey; she survives.

After 15 years of service, Douglas retired in 2014 from the Laborers International Union of NA AFL CIO Local 323, Butler, where he worked for Swidinsky Masonry. He had previously been employed as a general contractor. Following his 1970 graduation from Meadville High School, Douglas entered the US Army where he served in Germany during the Vietnam Conflict. He was honorably discharged on August 18, 1976. He enjoyed the outdoors. Douglas was known to many as a "jack of all trades". He was always willing to lend his handy man hands to family, friends and neighbors with their home projects, whether painting, construction or repair. He will be sadly missed.

In addition to his wife, Darlene, of 37 years, Douglas is survived by two sons Douglas Michael Straw and his wife Erin of Greenville, Jacob Charles Straw of Edinboro, three grandchildren Brayden Straw, Alexa Straw, Madison Straw, two sisters Patricia Palmiero and her husband Larry, his twin Debbie Jones and her husband Butch, a brother Robert Straw and his wife Jeannie, all of Meadville, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Memorial Service will be held at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, with retired Pastor, Martin Roth, officiating.

Douglas will be laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery, Harmonsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Project Support Our Troops-Post 52, 13240 Dunham Rd., or WCJ Ranch, Inc., (a non profit organization providing licensed shooting and hunting to disabled veterans), 305 Jefferson St., both in Meadville, PA 16335.
