Shirley E. Johnston

Shirley E. Johnston, 94, of Meadville, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at Wesbury United Methodist Community.

Shirley was born in Meadville, on May 23, 1925, a daughter of the late Darrel and Laurena (Whightman) Battles.

On August 25, 1941 Shirley married James H. Johnston; he preceded her in death in 1987.

Over the years, Shirley was employed by the former Talon, the former Meadville Ordnance Works and the former A & P Grocery, all of Meadville. She was a life member of West Mead #1 Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and a graduate of Meadville High School. Her hobbies and interests included watching as well as feeding the humming birds, crocheting and working outdoors whether mowing the yard or working in the flower gardens. She will be missed.

Shirley is survived by a daughter Virginia Johnston with whom she lived, allowing Shirley to continue to live at home while receiving loving care. She is also survived by two sons Gary Johnston, Dale Johnston (Laurie), all of Meadville, three grandchildren Brad Johnston (Amber), Kelly Spring (Bradley), Troy Johnston, all of Meadville, two great grandchildren Claralee Johnston, Austin Spring, a brother Herman Battles of Meadville, many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Shirley was preceded in death by a sister in law Velma Battles and a daughter in law Martha Johnston.

Family and friends are invited to call on Friday, June 14, 2019, from 11-1 at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE, where Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM with Pastor Randy Mason officiating.

Shirley will be laid to rest next to her husband, James, in Kiser Hill Cemetery, East Mead Township.
