Raymond Robert Smith

Raymond Robert Smith, 83, of 7109 N.W. 75th St., Tamarac, FL, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2019, at Northwest Medical Center, Margate, FL.

Raymond was born in Cleveland, OH on August 25, 1936, a son of the late Raymond G. and Florence (Coughlin) Smith.

On August 5, 1961, Ray married Eileen Thomas; she survives.

Ray was a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church, Tamarac, FL and a member of the "Life After Fifty" Fellowship group of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Plantation, FL. While living in Meadville, he was a member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church.

From January, 1993 until 2003 Ray taught English as a Second Language at the Florida Language Center in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. A dedicated educator, Ray was employed by Crawford Central School District from 1963-1992 where he taught Social Studies at Meadville Area Senior High School. He had previously taught in West Middlesex for two years. Ray loved teaching and mentoring his students. In 1955 Ray entered the US Army and served his county until his honorable discharge on July 12, 1957. A 1954 graduate of Meadville High School, Ray earned both his undergraduate and masters degrees from Edinboro University. He was a member of the PA State Teachers Association, the PA Association of State Retirees and a former member of the Meadville Elks BPOE #219. Ray was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed following all sports.

In addition to his wife, Eileen of 58 years, Ray is survived by two sons, Daniel Smith of N. Lauderdale, Gregory Smith and his wife Jacquelyn of Loxahatchee, FL, five grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Allison, Sabrina, Rebekah, a brother Thomas Smith and his wife Connie of Paisley, FL.

Family and friends are invited to call from 5-7 PM on Friday, October 4, 2019 at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, 353 Pine St., Meadville, with Fr. Jeffrey Lucas, Pastor, officiating. Full Military Honors Cochranton American Legion Post #836 will follow.

Ray will be laid to rest in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Township.
