Louis Joseph Saggio, 95, of 376 Arch St., Meadville, returned to his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community, Meadville.

Lou was born in Meadville on November 6, 1925, a son of the late Anthony and Rosalie (Piazza) Saggio.

On October 1, 1949, Lou married Margaret Mary Marcinko who preceded him in death on November 4, 2009.

Lou attended St. Brigid School and Meadville High School. He was a member of the Meadville ICC Club, the Meadville VFW, the Meadville Eagles and the Meadville Elks Club. He was a devoted member of St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, Meadville.

Lou Saggio enlisted in the Army on January 25, 1944 and was honorably discharged on April 13, 1946. Private First Class Saggio was a member of the Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 311th Infantry Regiment and was awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for meritorious service in setting up communication cables; many times in front of the front lines.

As a young man in his twenties, he and his cousin Vinnie Zoria co-owned the Vin-Lou Restaurant on Main Street in Meadville. He learned his craft as a chef while working at the Hotel Conneaut at Conneaut Lake Park. Lou and his wife Margaret had a well-known catering business in Meadville for many years. Lou worked at Mason’s Department Store including running the Camera Department. He later became the Manager of the Meadville Dahlkempers Store. In 1978 he was awarded the Dahlkemper’s President’s Cup as Employee of the Year. He retired from Dahlkempers in 1986.

Lou is survived by a daughter, Rosalee Ann Rastetter and her husband Stefan, of Erie; three sons, Anthony Stephen Saggio and his wife Georgetta of Allison Park, Louis Joseph Saggio Jr. and his wife Beth of Brentwood, TN, and Mark Anthony Saggio of Erie; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Margaret of 60 years, and the love of each others lives, Lou was preceded in death by two brothers Nick and Phil Saggio and two sisters Augie Saggio and Mildred Frisina.

Family and friends are invited to call from 2-6 PM on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE, where a Scripture Service will be held at 5:30 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday at The Epiphany of the Lord Parish, St. Brigid Church, 383 Arch St., Meadville, with Fr. Jeff Lucas, Pastor, officiating.

Lou will be laid to rest with his wife, Margaret, in St. Brigid Cemetery will Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006.

Memorial contributions may be made in Lou's name to Dr. Gertrude A. Barber Center, 136 East Ave., Erie, PA 16507.
