Lee M. Markey

Lee M. Markey, 85, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at home surrounded by his loved ones. He died the way he lived - with courage, dignity and a positive attitude.

Lee was born on July 9, 1932, in Mount Pleasant, the son of the late Virgil and Amelia (Pershing) Markey.

He graduated from Meadville High School in 1951 and enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 30, 1951. He was a Corporal in the Korean War with the 1st Marine Division, 1st Tank Battalion as a tank gunner and later, tank commander. During Lee's service he received the Purple Heart for wounds he received in the Battle of the Hook. He also earned several other citations and commendations. After his honorable discharge on July 29, 1954, he attended the former Alliance College, Cambridge Springs.

Lee retired from the National Distillers after a distinguished 40-year career in sales and marketing. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2006, the American Legion Post #111 and the Order of the Purple Heart. Lee was a kind man with a good sense of humor. He loved watching football on Sunday afternoons and after 70 years as a Cleveland Browns fan, he finally began rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Pauline (Fucci) Markey whom he married January 5, 1957; two daughters Michele Carlotti and her husband, Carl, of Erie, Jennifer Breckenridge-Walls and her husband, Brett, of Meadville, five grandchildren Taylor Kondor and her husband Patrick, Paige Carlotti, Zack and Luke Breckenridge and Jake Walls.

In addition to his parents, Lee was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil Markey, Jr.

Lee's family would like to extend its appreciation to the Southern Care Hospice Services. Lee loved his family and his home and Hospice provided the opportunity to spend his final days in the manner he chose. Special thanks to Kathy DeSantis and Debby Dougherty, his sisters in law, who put their lives on hold to help care for Lee.

Private services will be held at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE.

Lee will be laid to rest in St. Brigid Cemetery with Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
