Josephine 'Jo' L. Stan

Josephine 'Jo' L. Stan, 97, of Stan Road, Meadville, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at the Crawford County Care Center, Saegertown.

She was born May 20th, 1916 in Meadville, a daughter of the late Paul J. and Anna Marie (Schmidt) Stan.

She was a member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, Meadville, where she had also graduated from the former St. Agatha Catholic School.

Jo loved farming, and along with her sisters Kathryn and Margaret, owned and operated a dairy farm, truck garden and Stans Greenhouse. She attended the Meadville Market House for over 60 years where she met and made many friends and customers. Along with her sister, Margaret, she would be out picking corn for market at 4:30 in the morning so it would be fresh for market. She really loved picking corn and could pick it without any light, and have perfect corn for morning market. She had also worked at the former Talon, Inc., of Meadville. In her later years, after she had retired from farming, Jo loved her garden which she was generally in for most of the day, along with her cat, Goldie. Playing Scrabble with her niece-in-law, Nancy, was a passion too. She also enjoyed sharing her favorite recipes with the neighbors. She loved traveling with her niece and friend to visit relatives and friends whom she dearly loved.

Jo was quite fortunate to be in the care of such wonderful people as the Nurses, Aides and Staff of Maple St, at the Crawford County Care Center. Their love and compassion for Jo was exemplary; far beyond what was expected. It was deeply appreciated.

In addition to her niece, Maryann Schultz who lived with and cared for her, she is survived by a niece, three nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, a dear niece-in-law, and a very dear friend that also lived with and cared for her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six sisters Anna Cameron, Mary Bailey, Kathryn Stan, Margaret Stan, Dorothy Schultz, Elizabeth Shouey and a brother Joseph Stan.

Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, April 13, 2014, from 3-5 and on Monday, April 14, 2014 from 9:30-10:30 AM at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a Scripture Service will be conducted at 5 PM on Sunday.
