Joseph D. Barnes, P.E., 82, of 900 Market St., Meadville, passed away Friday, February 25th, 2011 at home.
Joseph was born on a farm in Panic, PA, on March 21, 1928, a son of the late Doyle and Lula (Hopkins) Barnes.
On June 25, 1949 Joseph married Shirley Bullers; she survives.
In 1945 Joseph graduated from Brookville High School, Brookville. A veteran of WW II, Joseph entered the US Army on February 6, 1946 and served his country until June 3, 1947. He was the recipient of the WW II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal for his time served in Japan. Upon his honorable discharge, Joseph went on to further his education by graduating from Penn State in 1951 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1961 he earned his Professional Engineer (P.E.) license. He was employed by Seco/Warwick, formerly known as Sunbeam and Westinghouse. Later becoming self-employed, Joseph owned Joseph D. Barnes, P.E., Consulting Engineering Firm. A life member of both the VFW Post #2006 and the Elks #219, Joseph was also a member of the ICC, the Hunting and Fishing Club and the Saegertown American Legion Post #205. He always enjoyed a good game of cards, especially Euchre.
In addition to his wife Shirley of 61 years, Joseph is survived by a daughter Peggy Larsen and her husband Jerry of Phoenix, AZ, three sons Doug Barnes and his wife Carrie, John Barnes, Tom Barnes and his wife Linda all of Meadville, 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, a daughter-in-law Loretta Barnes of Meadville, a sister Sue Shilling of Camp Hill, numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by a son Jim (JB) Barnes and a brother Robert Barnes.
At the familys request there will be no public visitation.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
