John T. Dephilip

John T. DePhilip, 69, formerly of Meadville, died February 19, 2010, in Silver Spring, MD, after a long illness. He was born in Pittsburgh, on October 27, 1940, and moved to Meadville with his family in 1955.
A 1959 graduate of St. Agatha High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1963, before completing his training in electronics and computer technologies at the RCA Institutes (now Technical Career Institute) in New York, NY, in 1967. He was a computer specialist with Sperry Univac (later becoming Unisys) and traveled around the world installing and servicing main frame computers.
After leaving Unisys, he worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, in Woods Hole, MA, where he developed computer programs for the robotic arm of submersible research vessels, until he retired to Silver Spring, MD, nine years ago. During retirement, John taught computer skills at Just Helping People and worked part-time at Zimmerman Supply Company, both in Silver Spring.
Johns avid, youthful interest in building model airplanes became a lifelong hobby and as an adult he belonged to several clubs whose members enjoyed flying radio-controlled model planes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph R. and Helen G. DePhilip, and by a brother, Joseph R. Jr.; and is survived by his sister Anne Windish of Pittsburgh, PA, sister Lynn Cullen of Basking Ridge, NJ; brother Robert DePhilip, and his wife Diane, of Westerville, OH; sister Rosemary Wolbert, and her husband Gary of Sigel, PA; and sister Rita Walker and her husband Michael, of Meadville, PA.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Agatha Church, Meadville.
Arrangements are under the direction of Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Seton School, 385 Pine St., St. Agatha Church, 353 Pine St., both of Meadville, PA 16335, or a charity of choice.
