John "Jack" S. Smith

John "Jack" S. Smith, 96, formerly of 635 Grant St., Saegertown, passed away Friday, August 10, 2018 at Manchester Commons, Erie, where he was a resident.

Jack was born in Kersey on September 15, 1921, a son of the late George S. and Florence (Paine) Smith.

On November 19, 1949 Jack married Susan "Susie" J. Marrone; she preceded him in death on May 6, 2012.

He was a member of St. Bernadette's Roman Catholic Church, Saegertown

In 1985 Jack retired from Windstream Communications in Kittanning. He had previously been employed by Alltel and Home Telephone, in Ridgeway. He was a graduate of Kersey High School. A veteran of the US Navy, Jack served on the USS Bunker Hill and participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was honorably discharged as Gunner's Mate, Second Class, on December 17, 1945. Jack was a member of Saegertown American Legion Post #205 as well as a member of Venango V.F.W. Post #169. He was a former member of the Kittanning Kiwanis and of the Armstrong County Drug and Alcohol Board. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, bird dogging, boating and cooking, He was a "Jack of all trades" but he would declare, "master of none". Among Jack's favorite sayings was, "Keep your powder dry", which always brought a smile to someone's face.

Jack is survived by three children, Jacqueline Smith and her husband Jack L. of Erie, Susan Hoffman and her husband Dennis L. of West Middlesex, John A. Smith and his wife Sandy of Saegertown, 7 grandchildren Tara Smith and her fiance' Ralph Redd, Kelly Southworth and her husband Jeff, Wesley Hoffman and his wife Jen, Jessica Abdelwahed and her husband Mohab, Kayli Styborski and her husband Randy, Shailyn Smith, Madison Mitchell and her husband Michael, eight great grandchildren Hunter, Maggie and Wyatt Hoffman, Lily Southworth, Graham Southworth, Parker Styborski, Remi Styborski, Mosa Abdelwahed, two nieces and two nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Susie, of 62 years and a sister Mary Huesgen.

Private services will be held at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 330 BROAD ST., SAEGERTOWN, with Deacon Robert Walker of Erie officiating.

Jack will be laid to rest next to his wife, Susie, in Saegertown Cemetery, Hayfield Twp., with Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006.

The family would like to extend appreciation to the staff of the Eagle Ridge Unit of Manchester Commons for the kindness, love and care they provided Jack during his stay.
