James E. Gill

James E. Gill, 89, of 719 Graff Ave., Meadville, passed away Saturday, April 5th, 2014 at UPMC-Hamot Medical Center, Erie.

James was born in Grove City, on January 18, 1925, a son of the late Raymond T. and Gladys E. (Gills) Gill.

On October 5, 1957 James married Margaret 'Peggy' Haugh; she preceded him in death on June 3, 2001.

For twenty years, James was self employed as a manufacturing representative. He previously had been employed by the former Wickes Lumber, the former Talon, Inc., Westinghouse, and the former Heatrix, Inc. A US Navy veteran, James served during both WW II and the Korean Conflict as a Naval Aviator. He was a 1942 graduate of Cochranton High School and a 1949 graduate of Grove City College. He was a life member of Meadville VFW Post #2006, a member of the Meadville Elks Club #219, Taylor Hose Club, American Legion Post #111, and a former member of Masonic Lodge # 234.

James is survived by three sisters Dorothy Wood and her husband Harry of Cochranton, Constance Merchbaker and her husband William of Meadville, Ellen Sue Riley of Erie, a brother Donald S. Gill and his wife Sharon of Conneaut Lake, a sister in law Billie Gill of Colorado, many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife Peggy of 43 years, James was preceded in death by a brother Richard T. Gill.

Family and friends are invited to call from 10-11:30 AM on Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Cochranton Presbyterian Church, 109 S. Smith St., Cochranton, where Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM with Pastor Rachel Johns officiating.

Following Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006, James will be laid to rest next to his wife, Peggy, in Cochranton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Richard T. Gill Memorial Scholarship Fund C/O Crawford Heritage Community Foundation, 911 Diamond Square, or Meadville Public Library, 848 N. Main Street, both in Meadville, PA 16335.

Arrangements are under the direction of Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.
