Mrs. I. Marie Hamilton, (96), of Meadville, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community.

Marie was born in Meadville on August 15, 1923, the daughter of the late Walter J. and Martha Marie (Jehn) Greenleaf, Sr.

On June 10, 1944 Marie married Paul M. Hamilton; he preceded her in death on February 5, 2010.

She was an active member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Meadville, where she served as Superintendent of Sunday School for ten years.

In 1974 Marie retired from the Laude County School District, Missouri, where she had been employed as an elementary school teacher for ten years. A 1941 graduate of Meadville High School, and a 1945 graduate of Allegheny College, Marie continued her education and received both her Master of Arts Degree in Teaching in 1963 and later earned her Advanced Graduate Credit Degree in Social Studies from Washington University, St. Louis, MO. For many years Marie worked on her son David's farm tending to the animals. Marie was a member of the Board of Directors of Women's Services, the Center for Family Services and the United Way of Western Crawford County where she was awarded the PA United Way Volunteer of the Year Award in 1994 and was the first recipient of the Raymond P. Shafer Award for volunteers. She also served as a member of the School Improvement Council, the Essential Services Coalition on Housing Needs, Woman's Literary Club, Hilltop Garden Club and Antique Study Club. Marie was community minded and enjoyed helping wherever there was a need. She was involved with the former McKeever Environmental Learning Center where she assisting in the student programs. In 1996, at the young age of 73, she was honored to be the Olympic Torch bearer as it moved from Ohio into Pennsylvania. Marie's life was full and rich. Her greatest pleasures in life came from the happy times she created with her family. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be sadly missed.

Marie is survived by two sons David Alan Hamilton (Cindy) of Saegertown, Craig Lee Hamilton (Darlene) of Conneaut Lake, five grandchildren Gene Hamilton, Brenda Hamilton, Lynnette Hamilton, Tonya Aultz (Matthew), Amber Hamilton, four great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and four nephews.

In addition to her husband, Paul, of 65 years, Marie was preceded in death by a great granddaughter Ava Marie Aultz, a brother Walter J. Greenleaf, Walter's wife Betsey and an infant brother John Arthur Greenleaf.

Private services will be held with Rev. Dr. Timothy M. Solomon, officiating.

Marie will be laid to rest with her husband, Paul, in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
