Harold Clare Emig

Harold Clare Emig, 92, of Evergreen Acre, Cochranton Road, Meadville, passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2016.

He was born on the family farm on March 26, 1924 in West Mead Township, the son of Oscar and Leona (Battles) Emig.

He married Maxene Elizabeth Shreffler on September 21, 1944. He was known by family and close friends as “Clare”.

Harold was a 1942 graduate of Meadville High School. He retired from American Viscose Corporation and Avtex after 38 years of service. He was later employed part-time at Moldex Tool and Design. Harold established “Rocky Run Park” on the land where he was born and raised, spending countless hours improving and maintaining it. He led many family hikes through the park area, giving tractor rides, picnicking and telling stories of the old days. Harold and Maxene were members of the Kon Yacht Kickers Square Dance Club for over 30 years. They were proficient in the advanced challenge levels of western square dancing and traveled to numerous national square dance conventions. He had a genuine interest in everyone he met, always remembering names, faces and places. Harold was a true outdoorsman who loved his horses & dogs, his tractors & cars. He enjoyed fishing, boating, vegetable gardening and bicycling. Hard-working and kind-hearted, Harold was the first to lend a helping hand to family, neighbor or friend, expecting nothing in return. He was a devoted husband and father and was full of love and pride for each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Sherry Fleischer and her husband Jon of Meadville, Maxene Davis, widow of Dale Davis of Cambridge Springs and Jeanne Straw and her husband Robert of Meadville; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey (Kari) Ferguson, Jason (Latisha) Craft, Jessica (Paul) Underwood, Tara (Joseph) Roche, Rachel (Timothy) Finale, Jon (Kate) Fleischer Jr. and Robert K. Straw; seven great-grandchildren, Breanna Ferguson, Marlea Ferguson, Michael Finale, John Finale, Luke Finale, Wyatt Fleischer and Wesley Fleischer; a sister-in-law, Joan Miller of Kingman, Arizona; as well as several step great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death on February 20, 2016, by his beloved wife of 71 years, Maxene; and a sister, Ethel L. Emig.

The memorial service will be private and at the convenience of the family.

At Harold’s request, his body will be donated to Erie’s LECOM Medical College for the advancement of medical education and research.

He will later be laid to rest at Greendale Cemetery.
