Dominic 'Mick' Varano

Dominic 'Mick' Varano, 98, of 698 Pine St., Meadville, passed away Tuesday, April 12th, 2011 at home.
Mick was born in Chicago, IL on March 21, 1913, a son of the late James and Catherine (Fera) Varano. At the age of three he and his family moved to Holland, MI, where he grew up.
On September 8, 1945 Mick married Mary DeSantis; she survives.
He was a member of St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, Meadville.
After 30 years of service, Mick retired in 1979 as Chief Clerk in the Valuation Dept. of the former Erie Railroad. He had previously been employed by Holland Color and Chemical Company, Holland, MI, as a lab technician. Just prior to being drafted by the military, Mick had been employed as a clerk for the former Keystone Ordnance Works. A WW II Army Air Corps veteran, Mick entered active duty on September 17, 1942 and had attained the rank of Corporal before being honorably discharged on October 16, 1945. He served in the European Theatre which included service in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. A dedicated blood donor for over 20 years, he proudly donated more than ten gallons of blood. Mick enjoyed the water, swimming, music and playing the organ. He was an avid tennis player, a gifted writer and speller, which enabled him to master crossword puzzles and Scrabble. His letters to the editor appeared frequently in the Meadville Tribune. He was a hard worker who always made good use of his time.
In addition to his wife, Mary, of 65 years Mick is survived by two sons Robert Varano and his wife Anne of Cleveland, OH, Glenn Varano and his wife Jennifer of Olympia, WA, four grandchildren Mary Anne Varano, Christopher Varano, Drew Varano, Paul Varano, a sister Natalie Galvin of Chicago, IL, a brother Frank Varano of Sun City, CA, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mick was preceded in death by five sisters Karen Ericson, Janet DeRose, Sister Mary Natalie Varano, Pauline Furchsam, Antoinette Maxon, two brothers Joe and Peter Varano.
Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 2-5 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home, 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 PM on Friday, April 15, 2011 at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, Meadville, with Fr. Mark OHern, Pastor, officiating.
Entombment, with full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006, will take place in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
