Bernice E. Kirkwood

Bernice E. Kirkwood, 92, of 535 Williamson Rd., Meadville, formerly of Golfview Manor, Meadville, passed away Saturday, October 8, 2016, at Crawford County Care Center, Saegertown.

Bernice was born in Meadville, on September 5, 1924, a daughter of the late Andrew and Etta (Zickefoose) Zirkle.

On May 14, 1943 Bernice married Walter J. Kirkwood; he preceded her in death on March 14, 2001.

She attended Allida-Smith Wesleyan Methodist Church.

Bernice enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her family. For a brief period of time, she was employed by the former Talon, Inc. of Meadville. She volunteered her time and talents at Meadville Medical Center. Her hobbies and interests included crocheting, and later in life she took up quilting. Bernice enjoyed dancing, reading and staying active.

Bernice is survived by a daughter Darlene Byers of Meadville, a son Duane Kirkwood and his wife Shirley of Saegertown, 8 grandchildren Jim Byers, David Byers, Sharon Byers, Andy Kirkwood, Doug Kirkwood, Tricia Birdsong, Ed Kirkwood, Kathy Kirkwood, 19 great grandchildren, two sisters Margaret M. Koehler of Saegertown, Virginia McGill of Meadville, a daughter in law Nancy Jane Kirkwood of Meadville, two step grandchildren Ann Lawless and her companion Steven Fields of Meadville, Christopher VanHuss and his wife Jody of Amelia, OH, several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Walter, of 57 years, Bernice was preceded in death by a son Edward Kirkwood, two grandchildren Karen Byers, Brian Kirkwood, two sisters Alva Thompson, Ruth Koehler, five brothers Bob, Art, Howard, Dorman and Dowden Zirkle.

Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 11-1 at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT STREET, MEADVILLE, where Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Mark Miller, Pastor of Allida-Smith Wesleyan Methodist Church, officiating.

Bernice will be laid to rest next to her husband, Walter, in Greendale Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
